Bespoke Processing
When a standard part doesn't fit the application, or a completely new component needs to be designed from scratch, Coburn Fasteners manages the process of turning that requirement into a stocked, supplied part.
We don't manufacture in-house. Instead, we draw on a network of specialist worldwide manufacturers to forge, machine, heat treat, coat and finish components to your exact specification, then hold that part in stock for the life of your project. From exotic materials like MP35N, Inconel 718 and PEEK, to tight-tolerance titanium and specialist coatings, we take on the projects that standard fastener suppliers often turn away.
Bespoke processing covers two scenarios: adapting an existing standard part to meet a specification it wasn't originally designed for; or developing an entirely new, unique component from a drawing or a performance requirement. In both cases, our role is to identify, test and secure the right process and the right supplier(s) to deliver it.
Complex bespoke components are typically turned around in as little as six weeks. Once a process is proven, we hold it in stock.
That proven process can mean sourcing a manufacturer capable of holding tight tolerances across an entire batch, as we did developing anodised titanium fasteners that needed to remain fully non-magnetic, including freedom from residual magnetism introduced during machining, for use in gyroscopic applications. It can mean combining multiple processes under one project (forging, fillet and thread rolling, heat treatment and final coating) where several specialist companies would otherwise need to be managed separately. Or it can mean solving a material processing and sourcing problem end to end, for example, a bespoke bolt worked to a customer's drawing in 709M40T (EN19T) steel, heat treated to Condition Y and coated in Sheraplex, then delivered pre-assembled and ready to fit.
We work across exotic and high-performance materials, including MP35N, Inconel 718, ToughMet and PEEK in virgin, glass-filled and carbon-filled grades, and across processes including milling, hot forging, fillet rolling, thread rolling and turned parts.
Bespoke processing supports engineering teams wherever a standard, off-the-shelf fastener won't meet the application. That includes subsea and offshore assemblies requiring specific steel grades and heat treatments, precision instrumentation such as gyroscopes that demand fully non-magnetic titanium components, and drivetrain systems relying on specialist coated shims for torque transfer.
We've supported customers in oil and gas and automotive engineering environments, delivering everything from custom-coloured anodised fasteners used for component identification, to structural bolts rated for direct-to-end-user assembly.
Bespoke work carries a specific risk for buyers in that they might be managing a component that depends on several suppliers, several processes and several handoffs, with no single party accountable if something goes wrong. We remove that risk by managing the whole supply chain. Every bespoke component goes through the same rigour as our standard sourced parts (dimensional inspection, material verification and mechanical test reporting) with full traceability back to source.
Because we don't manufacture in-house, our value is in knowing which Global specialists can deliver your tolerance, your material grade and your finish, and in managing that supplier relationship and process knowledge on your behalf once it's proven.
Ready to see what it looks like?
If you have a part that doesn't exist yet, or a standard component that's failing in your application, send us the drawing, the specification, or simply the problem you're trying to solve. We'll identify the process, source the right manufacturer, and get it into stock so it's ready whenever you need it again.
